 Perthshire in winter

Activities

Perthshire is renowned for outdoor sports and pursuits. In addition to a myriad of rivers and lochs such as the Tay, the Tummel and the Earn for fishing, there are golf courses right up to championship standard (Blairgowrie or Gleneagles) and a ski centre at Glenshee to make the most of winter snow.

You might want to try white water rafting at Aberfeldy, climb a few Munros around Loch Tay or try a day's shooting on one of Perthshire's estates.

Historical

If it's history you want, why not take a tour round some of the castles and historic houses? You could start at Blair Castle to the north of Pitlochry, move on down to Scone Palace a couple of miles north of Perth, then finish at Balhousie Castle and get to know the fascinating history of the Black Watch Regiment.

Or perhaps go west taking in Huntingtower Castle just outside Perth and after viewing Methven Castle from the road, turn north to Aberfeldy to see the magnificent Taymouth Castle before finishing your tour with Castle Menzies.

Whisky

The Speyside Whisky Trail is given a run for it's money by the distilleries in Perthshire. Decide on your favourite after sampling the whiskies in Crieff (GlenTurret Distillery), Aberfeldy (Dewars World of Whisky), Pitlochry (Blair Atholl Distillery) and Edradour (Scotland's smallest distillery).

Shopping

Perth itself is a shopper's paradise. All the usual department stores mingle happily with small specialist boutiques in the compact city centre. And all within minutes of The Ballantrae Bed and Breakfast.

If you fancy a trip further afield, why not try The House Of Bruar, known as the "Harrods of Scotland" and located conveniently off the A9 about ten miles north of Pitlochry.

For peace and tranquility

We thoroughly recommend an afternoon's quiet enjoyment of Branklyn Gardens in the centre of Perth. Or perhaps you could spend an entire day at nearby Cherrybank Gardens; we just hope you won't be overwhelmed by the vast collection of plant species.

Of course, the lochs and rivers aren't just for fishing. We often find there is nothing more soporific than sitting at the water's edge enjoying the beautiful scenery and perhaps seeing the fish jump, safe from an intrepid fisherman on that day at least.
